Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4/5) This is a wonderful book. Was this review helpful for you? Rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4/5) Was this review helpful for you? As soon as I started reading this book, I could tell why there have been so many rave reviews. The writing is beautiful, sometimes desperately, achingly beautiful. I don't often notice or comment on themes in books, but the lovely title of this book highlights the role light plays in the lives of both main characters, a blind girl and a young boy in love with the radio waves that travel invisibly through the world. It also reminds me of the heartbreaking unrealized potential of these two young people, who adore learning but have limited opportunities because of the war torn time they live in. Another theme that drew me in was the question of morality and self-determination, viewed through the lens of a young man coming of age in Nazi Germany. The only thing that let me down about the book was the ending, which continues until the present day without adding anything important to the story after the end of WWII.
